AI adoption becomes visible in spending and revenue

The commercial story of 2025 was increasingly measurable. More businesses were paying for AI tools, contracts were growing, and leading AI companies were building revenue quickly. The strongest evidence came from defined customer and company cohorts, each with its own limits.

Did 44% of all US businesses use AI in 2025?Were AI-first companies growing faster? Was $18.5B a full year of AI revenue?Did fast growth imply strong margins?

Paid adoption rises in Ramp’s customer base

Ramp’s card and bill-payment data from more than 45,000 US businesses showed paid AI adoption increasing from 5% in January 2023 to 43.8% in September 2025. The report contrasted that with a much lower government estimate. Different samples and definitions produce different adoption rates, so the Ramp result should not be treated as a census of all US businesses.

AI-first companies grow faster in the observed cohort

Standard Metrics data showed upper-quartile AI companies growing quarterly revenue about 1.5 times as fast as all-sector peers in the latest quarter reported. The analysis covered 315 companies with $1M-$20M of annualized revenue and 86 above $20M. That was evidence about observed growth in those cohorts, not proof that adopting AI caused any company to grow faster.

Revenue growth and profitability are different questions

A selected cohort of 16 AI-first companies had reached $18.5B in annualized revenue by August 2025. At the same time, coding products faced substantial model and inference costs. The report separated strong demand from the harder question of which layer of the stack would retain attractive margins. Annualized revenue was a run-rate measure, not a completed year of recognized revenue.

Ramp observes spending in its customer base. The sample and definition differ from government surveys and are not representative of every US business. The 44% figure in the launch post rounds the 43.8% reported in the deck.
