Data-center demand transforms NVIDIA’s business
The report recorded $10.32 billion in NVIDIA quarterly data-center revenue, up 171% from a year earlier. The company entered the trillion-dollar market-capitalization club as labs and companies competed for hardware. The revenue figure described NVIDIA’s data-center business, not the revenue of the AI application market.

Research hardware remains highly concentrated
The Compute Index found NVIDIA chips used 19 times as often as all alternatives combined in the papers it tracked. Comparisons with individual alternatives were larger still. This documented the research ecosystem’s reliance on one supplier without claiming that paper mentions were the same as chip shipments or cloud capacity.

A large footprint creates a difficult competitive starting point
The same index reported NVIDIA usage 31 times that of FPGAs and 150 times that of TPUs. Those ratios helped explain why competing on a chip’s specifications alone was insufficient to describe the market. Researchers’ existing tools and hardware choices formed part of the starting conditions for challengers.
