Research Assistant — State of AI Report 2026
Help produce one of the most widely read and trusted independent annual reports on artificial intelligence, reaching hundreds of thousands of researchers, company leaders and policymakers around the world.
Location: Remote
Commitment: Approximately 30 days between July and September 2026
Compensation: Up to $3,000 fixed project rate

About the role
Work with Nathan Benaich to research and produce the 2026 State of AI Report. You will identify what mattered in AI over the past year, turn complex evidence into clear analysis, and help shape the public discourse around one of the most consequential technologies of our time.
Responsibilities
- Research and produce a compelling narrative of annual progress in AI.
- Read and distil academic papers, policy and industry trends into clear analytical summaries.
- Create analysis, charts and slides with a consistent tone, voice and visual style.
- Develop compelling, non-obvious narratives and primary research.
- Fact-check key content and coordinate with external peer reviewers.
- Support publication and distribution.
Who you are
- A strong writer and clear communicator.
- Technically fluent enough to understand the nuances of AI research.
- Familiar with recent developments in academic and applied AI.
- Ideally equipped with a research background or deep self-taught AI experience.
You might be a current Master’s or PhD student, postdoctoral researcher, someone working in the AI startup or industrial research landscape, or taking time between roles. Applicants from underrepresented backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
